Why You Shouldn't Be an Entrepreneur

Why You Shouldn't Be an Entrepreneur

Having the freedom to choose your own schedule and work when you want. A chance to work from the beach or just work from the comfort of your own home. Building your dream product or service exactly how you decide. No boss to tell you differently, no compromises to make, no tasks you’re forced to do.

Being an entrepreneur sounds great except when it isn’t.

I speak from experience. While sharing top marketing tips on OKDORK, I founded AppSumo and Sumo, which is now an 8-figure business. (Before that, I saw what it’s like to build a business as employee no. 30 at Facebook and employee no. 4 at Mint.com.)

For all the freedom to choose your own schedule, there are 90+ hour workweeks. For every day working from the beach, there are months spent grinding away in a small apartment. For every product or service you dream of creating exactly how you want, there are bad reviews, customer complaints and months with low sales.

I’ve learned a lot from my jobs, businesses I built and fellow entrepreneurs I help. One thing I learned from teaching entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. The truth is, while entrepreneurship can be glamourous, that's not always the case. And there’s no shame in being a full-time employee for someone else. In fact, it might be better suited for you.

To help you figure out if you’re better suited for entrepreneurship or being an employee, I developed the “Four Ps”  a framework you can use to understand your next step.

The importance of colors in marketing and branding

Colors due to their visual beauty have psychological effects on people’s minds and so play important roles in our lives through the feelings that make in us in first expressions, snap judgments, decision-makings, etc.  Hence, marketers tried to benefit from the colors’ effects for their marketing and sales approaches.

It is believed that each color may transfer a special feeling or message to the visitor, so if we accept this belief as a fact, we need to be careful about the colors we use for our branding activities. Although the color is not the main part of marketing, but they can be perfect ways of attracting people’s attention and make the brand logo memorable.

The Marketing Power of Rewards Programs

The Marketing Power of Rewards Programs

A rewards program can help you build customer loyalty, deepen engagement, and serve as a marketing benefit you can tout to attract new customers. Need proof? Research shows consumers in the United States account for more than 3 billion memberships in consumer loyalty programs. Here’s a closer look at how your business can leverage consumer interest in rewards, along with best practices you can adapt from major brands’ most successful loyalty programs.

Lead with a strong offer. Customers may be willing to sign up for your rewards program, but it’s important to know that their membership doesn’t equate to loyalty. In fact, just 13 percent of customers are complete loyalists who never shop around. Your rewards program should be appealing enough to entice customers to want to sign up — and use it repeatedly. Consider how your rewards program could be structured to reward customers when they agree to join, and to encourage them to return consistently. The rewards program offered by outdoor retailer REI, for example, charges members a fee to join — but then offers a coupon in the same amount of the fee to offset the cost of the program, as well as access to additional coupons throughout the year, and the ability to earn points on purchases for even more savings.

Why are so many women mired in the middle ranges and what must be done to take them to the top?

Why are so many women mired in the middle ranges and what must be done to take them to the top?

As a woman who is living in the Middle East, it was always one of my main questions that why among all faces who are top managers, I can’t see many women! Aren’t we enough? What is the reason? Is it something related to ourselves or is it something related to the society? So I’ve started searching, here are some points that I could find:

1-      Mindsets across the board need to change and that includes the mindsets of women too. For the barriers to come down and for more women to rise to the top of their chosen fields there needs to be a brand new approach to the way we as a society view a whole host of things: From gender equality to maternity leave. [1]

2-       They must know what they want in their work, along with that learn to balance their personal and professional life well. For it is very important to know what you want and then work towards that direction. [2]

3-      Women are mired, as they are ignorant about their strength. They need to stand up on their own and take charge of their own life, grow stronger each day and empower themselves. [3]

4-      There are 3 main instructions, which should be considered and obeyed in order to be a top manager, but one of the instructions always missed when they are giving to women and this %33 missing part is the main reason that the number of women who are standing in the high manager positions are too low!

7 Ways to Prevent Your Ideas from Getting Killed

7 Ways to Prevent Your Ideas from Getting Killed

A lot of my business ideas got killed in my 30-year-career. In practice, I have learned the hard way that if your new idea doesn’t fit your organisation, it will be rejected and nothing will materialize in the end. That's why I like to help you with 7 ways to prevent your ideas from getting killed.

Ideas are stopped by a lot of ‘noes’

The single biggest obstacle at the start of innovation is one single word: no. As your idea is new, otherwise it’s not innovation, it will get a lot of opposition. As startup partners and financers will confront you with a lot of doubts. As a corporate innovator it will be your colleagues and managers giving comments like:

  • No, we have always done it this way...
  • No, our customers won’t like that!
  • No, we don’t have time for this…
  • No, it’s not possible...
  • No, it's too expensive!
  • No, let’s be realistic…
  • No, that’s not logical…
  • No, we need to do more research…
  • No, there's no budget…
  • No, top management won’t agree...
  • No, the market is not ready yet...
  • No, it might work in other places but not here...
  • No, that's way too risky...
  • No, it doesn't fit our strategy...
  • No, that’s for the future...

For all the startling statements we see, is there in fact business advice that may “feel right,” but could actually be damaging?

Every year, millions of new businesses are launched around the world. And with this tidal wave of entrepreneurship comes an even bigger tsunami of advice from books, magazines, consultants, self-styed business gurus and university professors.

But it’s important that an opinion is not mistaken for best practice. In reality, every business is different, and every businessperson has his or her own style of decision-making. Problems arise if a founder bases their whole set-up on one piece of advice, without questioning its appropriateness to their specific company.
